After one of our users correctly cast Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander in the upcoming Harry Potter Spin-off, we were eagerly waiting to learn who would play his wife, Porpentina. Reportedly on the short list for the part was model Kate Upton, Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby), and Katherine Waterston (Inherent Vice).
Now, Collider reports that Waterston is the lucky choice and will play Tina (short for Porpentina), a witch living in the U.S. who crosses paths with Scamander when he stops in New York City on his travels to find and document magical creatures.
Other Casting Choices
Two other crucial roles are yet to be filled for the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them cast: Queenie, Porpentina’s younger sister, and a man named Jacob who is some sort of rival to Scamander.
The short lists for both parts were last recorded as Saoirse Ronan, Dakota Fanning, Lili Simmons (Banshee), and Alison Sudol (Transparency) for Queenie while Steve Zissis (Togetherness), Zack Pearlman (Mulaney), and Dan Fogler (Fanboys) were reportedly among the actors testing for Jacob. We can’t be sure if these actors are still in the running or if new names have been introduced but it’s an exciting list nonetheless!
The studio is reportedly looking to find more established faces for Fantastic Beasts as opposed to the newcomers who were cast in Harry Potter. With that in mind, Fanning and Ronan seem like they have an edge. As for Jacob, we would really love to see Zissis on the big screen – he’s quite funny in HBO’s Togetherness!
What Do You Think?
J.K. Rowling wrote the script for Fantastic Beasts herself, and production is set to begin later this year to make a slated November 18, 2016 release date. Do you agree with Waterston as Porpentina? Who would you want to see play Queen and Jacob? Tell us on The IF List!
