Is 2015 finally going to be Britt Robertson’s year? The 25-year-old actress has been in the game for more than 15 years with starring roles in several television shows and indie movies. None, however, have been the role that catapults her into the spotlight.
Throughout the years, each new character that Britt Robertson played seemed like it could be her breakout role, but never panned out. Now, Robertson is starring in her first big budget film along side George Clooney in the sci-fi adventure Tomorrowland, which comes out on Friday.
The film will follow Clooney as an aging scientist who sets out along with gifted teen Casey, played by Robertson, to uncover the secrets of Tomorrowland, a place that is caught between time and space.
A Good Year For Britt
With a summer blockbuster like Tomorrowland, I can’t help but think (and hope) that this will be Britt Robertson’s lucky break. She’s had a good year, starring alongside Scott Eastwood in the latest Nicholas Sparks film, The Longest Ride and on the first two seasons of the summer show show Under the Dome on CBS.
I first saw Robertson on the short-lived CW series, Life Unexpected. She played a teenager named Lux who had lived in foster care her entire life, and has finally reached the age of emancipation.
In order to do this, she needed to get the signatures of her birth parents, but the judge ultimately ordered that she be put into joint custody of her biological parents Cate (Shiri Appleby) and Baze (Kristoffer Polaha). Robertson played the snarky yet extremely likable Lux perfectly. However, the show didn’t last more than two seasons.
The Secret Circle
After the cancellation, The CW was clearly still a fan of Robertson and cast her as the star of another short-lived series The Secret Circle. The network seemed to be in search of another hit in the supernatural drama genre after the huge success of The Vampire Diaries and The Secret Circle, which followed a coven of teen witches. This wasn’t my favorite role for Robertson, especially after seeing Life Unexpected – I knew that she had more to offer than what was given to her in the series.
The First Time
Robertson then went on to star in one of my favorite teen indie films, The First Time, with her now boyfriend Dylan O’Brien.
The film take places over the course of a weekend and follows high school senior Dave (O’Brien) and junior Aubrey (Robertson) who meet outside of a party. Robertson and O’Brien have great chemistry and it came across on screen even though Robertson’s character, Aubrey, tries to fight it. Her performance left viewers feeling like they either knew someone like Aubrey or identified with her themselves.
