In an interview with Collider, Tom revealed that he would love to play The Punisher, aka Frank Castle, the fictional antihero in the Marvel Universe who began a war on crime after the brutal deaths of his wife and children. Here’s what Tom had to say about the role:
Collider: I heard Warner Bros. has a few more superhero movies, maybe one or two that they’re developing [Laughs].
HARDY: I want The Punisher… I want The Punisher, or Splinter Cell, I want something…I don’t know what I want.
Collider: You as Punisher could be very interesting.
HARDY: I’m not big enough to be The Punisher, I’m 5’9” [Laughs].
Collider: But I actually think that adds to the character.
HARDY: Frank Castle, I would love it. Is that him, isn’t it?
Collider: Yeah. It’s Frank Castle.
The Punisher has proven to be a very popular Marvel series and two films have already been made, with Thomas Jane and Ray Stevenson taking a turn to portray the title character. The dark nature of the series and the psychological trouble Frank Castle experiences is definitely up Tom Hardy’s alley (many still believe Tom’s Bane was the best thing about Dark Knight Rises, me included!).
I also think Hardy could add something that has been missing from the past film adaptations with his star power, talent, and the dedication he gives to his roles. The Punisher fans have waited a long time for a worthy adaptation, and Tom would definitely do the source material justice.
Tom mentioned the video game series Splinter Cell in the interview as well. Coincidentally, a fan on The IF List already thought Hardy would be awesome as Sam Fisher in an adaptation! “Splinter Cell” refers to an elite recon-type unit of single covert operatives (Sam Fisher is one of them) who are supported in the field by a high-tech remote team. If you think Tom would be great as the stealthy operative Sam Fisher add your support here >>
No matter the role, Tom Hardy is definitely interested in getting back into the comic universe. You can browse his other proposals on The IF List and propose your ideas for the actor! >>
