First Look: Jared Leto as The Joker Is Not What We Expected

This is a new age of comic villains! Based on the upcoming comic book block busters we’ve gotten a look at, the current trend seems to be younger, more human looking bad guys. For example, we recently reported the first image of Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luther and director Zach Snyder even commented, “He’s not any of the Lexes that you’ve seen, that’s for sure.”

Well neither is Jared Leto‘s version of The Joker! You can’t see much in the first image released of his look for Suicide Squad, but it’s enough to know he won’t be going the Heath Ledger, costume and heavy make-up route.

The image that director David Ayer released pays homage to the first issue of Batman: The Killing Joke, but Leto isn’t wearing white face paint or red lipstick. Instead he is going with a short green buzz, which may be the most shocking choice they could have made for Leto specifically as he usually rocks locks long enough to be compared to Jesus!

In addition to Leto as The Joker, seeing the whole cast of Suicide Squad together really reminds you what an epic film this is going to be. Ayer tweeted this image of the first cast read through a day before where you can see Will Smith, Jai Courtney, Viola Davis, Joel KinnamanMargot Robbie, Cara Delevingne, Ike Barinholtz (yes as in Morgan from the Mindy Project) and more!

Suicide Squad hits theaters Aug. 5, 2016.  Do you think Jared Leto looks awesome as the new joker or would you have rather seen someone else? Leave a comment and browse other proposals for The Joker on The IF List!
